Last night, on March 17th, 2024, appropriately a Sunday, I experienced one of the most amazing natural light shows I have ever seen. This was at the California coast on Highway 1 before it becomes Highway 128. Take a look at the video below. It felt, to me, like a “hello” from the almighty.
It was before sunset and I pulled over and took a few photos of the sun coming through some amazing rolling clouds. As I watched, the show got better and better and I decided to get a video. What I recorded were multiple spotlight beams of sunlight moving on the water in a coordinated dance. What I realized after watching for several minutes was this: I was seeing the beams moving as a single giant rotating structure, searching the water, a slow spin of heavenly spotlights.
As I watched this amazing show, part of it was going on in the distance, and then one large bright yellow beam of light, the brightest in the show, at one point started heading directly for me. When it got close, it formed a very clear non-natural looking rectangle. It looked like a floating mattress of light on the water. When I was doubting what I just saw, the performance repeated, making yet another mattress of light, even brighter, in the same location as the first. This was very moving because that morning I had been considering getting a new mattress.
As you know, videos never do the real thing justice. Nevertheless, above is the video I made, sped up so you can see what took about 13 minutes happening in 2 minutes. The sound is removed to keep the video size down, but it is still about 10 MB, so skip it if you aren’t on a good unlimited data connection like WiFi.
