Based on a one day sample of news headlines, we conducted an analysis of the individual and of the overall bias of the approximately 100 news feeds in our Know Views News web page. Here is a summary of the key trends:
Overall Bias Distribution
– Neutral (N): The most common rating, appearing in about 75% of the sources
– Left-leaning (L): Second most common, in roughly 25% of sources
– Violence-related content (V): Noted in approximately 25% of sources
– Right-leaning (R): Third most common, in about 20% of sources
– Science/Technology focus (S): Present in about 15% of sources
Bias Type | Number of Sites |
---|---|
Science bias | 14 |
Right wing bias | 17 |
Violence bias | 22 |
Left wing bias | 27 |
Neutral bias | 77 |
Key Observations
1. The collection shows a slight overall lean towards the left, with more left-leaning sources than right-leaning ones.
2. Many sources are rated as mixtures (e.g., “Mixture of N and L” or “Mixture of N and R”), indicating nuanced biases.
3. Mainstream news outlets often fall in the Neutral to Slight Lean (Left or Right) range.
4. Strongly partisan sources exist on both ends of the spectrum, but are less common than moderate or neutral sources.
5. Science and technology-focused sources tend to be rated as Neutral.
6. Violence-related content is present across the political spectrum but more common in international news coverage.
Commentary
This was surprising for the News i8 staff who expected a more right-wing heavy rating and was not aware that most feeds would be rated as politically neutral. As a single day’s headlines may be too small a sample to give a realistic picture, it is an interesting study.
Conclusion
While the collection includes sources from across the political spectrum, it appears to have a slight overall left-leaning bias when considered in aggregate. However, the predominance of Neutral ratings suggests an effort to include balanced sources. The diversity of perspectives represented allows for a relatively comprehensive view of current events and issues.
