I came by your blog last night, Xeno, and found it full of all sorts of fascinating stuff. You give good advice here, most of which I follow. But being an IT neanderthal, I am still getting my head around the whole meme/hash tag thing.
I never liked the word “meme” but I think it’s an interesting cultural thing and hashtags I think of as topic channels, if that helps. Just by adding the tag to your post you get into that topic channel.
It’s a fun hobby. In my case blogging is watching the world events for helpful or entertaining oddities to post. Before Facebook ate the Internet I had amazing traffic. One day in the millions. Ah, the good old days. 😉
The address in your profile leads to a deleted blog. Are you still blogging?
I’m still blogging. I changed its name to My worlds in Reading. In my header, though, I call it Worlds of Reading. I blog about books and libraries.
Ah, so if you want, you could edit your profile and update marij88old19.wordpress.com to that new address and people will be able to reach your blog from your comments. ? on the iPhone App, its under Me (icon at bottom) | Account Settings | Web Address
Thanks. I’ve done it.
What a nice idea of a meet and greet! Only recently found your site but I’m a fan of anything odd, mysterious, and monstrous. Love catching up on the weird world. Thanks for the follow. Cheers
You’ve got some fun monsters on your blog, enjoying it. Have you seen the field guide to extraterrestrials? It’s a great little book with sketches from real sightings of what people said they saw and some are very different from what people typically think of the little Grey aliens.
Just found it on Amazon. Lump it into my next order. Thanks so much for the heads up.
Cool, monster on.

What great ideas! So much more practical than other advice I have seen. Meet and greet is genius! Out of curiosity where do you put the hashtag? Somewhere within the post or in the tags? I am not very tech savvy and learning as I go. http://www.sunflowersinsummer.wordpress.com
I think of hashtags as primarily for other social media to bring people to a wordpress.com site. There are plug-ins if you use the WordPress platform on your own host (called WordPress.org sites). I have one of each type. TrueStrange.com is (was) wordpress.com (cheapest plan to let me use my own domain name) and truestrangenews.com is a WordPress.org site I change as I want without any restrictions (you have to be your own tech support, or get a hoast like WP Engine which does some admin for you.) https://wordpress.com/go/solve/what-are-hashtags/
These days there are other options besides WordPress. I work with Squarespace, Wix, BandZoogle, and others, but like WordPress for many reasons. The Topic Tags I’ve added… are close to hashtags, but not really, because they only filter results based on what is on my site. A proper hashtag plug-in for WordPress would show articles from everyone’s blog based on tags. I think that would be a great idea. Anyone know of such a thing in the works? There actually is something like this in the WordPress Reader. You can try it here to see if your site is showing up in searches.
Someone else tookover TrueStrange.com and I kept Truestrangenews.com to redirect to newsi8.com. I don’t know who has TrueStrange.com, but last I checked they had some copy up that I wrote I believe, like this: “TrueStrange is a science, technology, politics, arts, and strange events news blog. Outside content excerpted is quoted, linked to the original source, and is used in accordance with the Fair Use provision of US copyright law which permits use for news reporting and commenting.” and also this title “42 principles of Maat 2000 years before ten commandments”, but not my words from when I wrote that article, which is good. The author says “Loretta Smith and the post date is March 11, 2008”. Interesting to find that in 2026. The email contact says “Email: Feel free to drop us an email at info@cyonwo.com for any inquiries, collaborations, or simply to say hello.” Archive.org says their site started in 2012 and had this info: “Cyonwo (Cyber Online World) is Web and IT service providing company.” with an obviously wrong phone, at least for the USA: “+880-1756-616362 cell”. Anyway, when you do not renew a web site, as I did not with truestrange.com, it is fair game for others to grab it an use the name, so it’s fun to see what someone else did with it.
Great idea! Fitbit had a popular thing going where you could share your number of steps and exercise with friends and family and have little challenges between friends. I enjoyed that once, but kept losing the little things.
