Look, it would be really nice in some ways if light behaved like sound, but it doesn’t. There is sound cancelling technology, but there is no light canceling technology. Thus, there is no EMF cancelling technology that works by destructive interference as some EMF shields claim. Light and sound do not behave the same way. There is no equivalent to sound cancelling technology for light.
- Sound is a mechanical wave that travels through a medium like air, while light is an electromagnetic wave that can travel through a vacuum.
- Sound waves can be cancelled out by destructive interference, where two sound waves of the same frequency but opposite phase combine to cancel each other out. This is the basis for sound cancelling technology.
- Light waves cannot be cancelled out in the same way. There is no known way to create “anti-light” waves that would destructively interfere with light and cancel it out.[12]14]
While metamaterials and other advanced materials can be engineered to manipulate light in unusual ways, such as bending or routing light, there is no equivalent to the active noise cancellation used for sound waves.[14] The fundamental physical differences between light and sound make light cancellation an impossibility.
To keep from buying products which do not have any plausible functional basis of action, it is important to understand some physics about light and other electromagnetic radiation. Once you do, it becomes clear that any claims EMF protection products work by “resonance” between different EMF frequencies[11] are ignoring over a century of scientific evidence and reality as we know it.
Resonance is a real phenomena. It occurs when a system is driven at its natural frequency, causing the amplitude of oscillation to increase. This is a well-understood phenomenon in physics and engineering, but resonance does not apply to the interaction between different electromagnetic frequencies.
Electromagnetic waves of different frequencies simply pass through each other without any resonant interaction. Electromagnetic radiation you can not see is see is still electromagnetic radation, like light. Blue light does not “resonate” with red light to produce purple light, nor do they cancel out – the two frequencies simply propagate independently.
The different frequencies of electromagnetic radiation, whether from power lines, appliances, or other sources, do not “resonate” with each other. They behave as independent waves that can and do occupy the same space without affecting one another’s propagation!
The different frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as radio waves, microwaves, visible light, X-rays, and gamma rays, can coexist in the same physical space without interfering with each other’s transmission.[6][7][8][9]
Claims that EMF protection products work by “resonance” between EMF frequencies are therefore scientifically inaccurate. Electromagnetic waves do not resonate with each other in that manner. Any purported EMF protection mechanism based on “resonance” is likely pseudoscientific and not grounded in the physics of electromagnetic radiation.[1][2][3]
Science will show valid measurements repeatable by others. If someone wants you to believe something that goes against known science and also does not provide any compelling evidence, walk away. If you enjoy these devices as works of art, however, and if they give you enjoyment and any mental peace of mind, have fun shopping!
