A photograph claiming to show a 55-foot 140 year old snake discovered in a Chinese forest went viral online in late 2019. This image was initially shared on the People’s Daily website, which is affiliated with the Communist Party of China. The accompanying narrative suggested that the snake was one of two massive boas found by workers clearing land for a new road near Guping city in Jiangxi province. The workers allegedly disturbed the resting snakes while bulldozing a mound of earth.
Upon closer examination, the size of the tractor’s scoop in the photo indicates that the snake is likely much shorter, around 25 feet, suggesting that the image may be an example of forced perspective—a photographic technique that creates an illusion of size. Another fabricated image was circulated for amusement and the story was that an individual was detained for sharing the poorly edited photo of a snake, as the person was falsely claiming it was a dragon and was linking it to a deadly earthquake.
While some individuals may find humor in these stories, many remain unaware of the extent to which images can be manipulated using software like Photoshop. This program in 2019, before Adobe put all of its software into the cloud so it could monitor everything on earth people did with photos, allowed users to easily alter photos by cutting, resizing, and pasting objects into different backgrounds. Note that since this text was originally written around 2019, the landscape has changed significantly with the introduction of AI image generators which were not publicly available at that time. Nowadays, images similar to the one above can be created in just a few minutes using various free online AI tools that convert text prompts into images, making it even easier to produce convincing and astonishing visual content without traditional editing skills. Here’s a quick example:
When discussing the longest real snake ever recorded, it is important to note that reliable measurements should ideally come from deceased specimens or heavily sedated snakes, measured with witnesses present. One reticulated python was measured at nearly 22 feet under anesthesia, while some less credible reports claim lengths up to 33 feet. However, there are no verified accounts of snakes reaching 55 feet.
In 2004, there was a report about a 49-foot reticulated python captured in Indonesia. Local officials claimed this snake weighed almost 990 pounds and attracted crowds at a zoo in Curugsewu village on Java’s main island. If confirmed, it would have been the largest snake ever kept in captivity. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the longest captured snake at 32 feet and the heaviest at 402 pounds.
Despite these claims, subsequent fact-checking revealed that the actual length of this supposed giant python was significantly exaggerated. A reporter sent to measure the snake found it to be between 21 and 23 feet long and estimated its weight at around 220 pounds. The discrepancies were attributed to various factors affecting a python’s size, such as recent meals and shedding cycles.
This case illustrates how major news outlets can report unverified claims without thorough fact-checking. While reputable publications may eventually issue corrections, many people still believe sensational stories like the one about the giant python in Indonesia.
The reticulated python and boa constrictor are two of the largest snake species, each with distinct characteristics in size and patterns.
Size Comparison
Species | Maximum Length | Average Length | Weight |
---|---|---|---|
Reticulated Python | Up to 33 ft (10 m) | 10-20 ft (3-6 m) | Up to 200 lbs (90 kg) or more |
Boa Constrictor | Up to 13 ft (4 m) | 6-10 ft (1.8-3 m) | Up to 100 lbs (45 kg) |
The reticulated python is known for its impressive length, often cited as the longest snake species in the world. While there are reports of individuals reaching lengths of up to 49 feet, these claims are often exaggerated, with more reliable measurements indicating lengths closer to 22 feet. In contrast, the boa constrictor typically reaches a maximum length of about 13 feet.
Pattern Differences
– Reticulated Python: Features a complex pattern of dark brown and gold or yellow markings that create a net-like appearance. This intricate pattern helps it blend into its tropical habitat.
– Boa Constrictor: Displays a more straightforward pattern with large, darker saddle-like markings on a lighter background, which can vary in color from browns to reds. The pattern is less intricate than that of the reticulated python.
Both species exhibit remarkable adaptations for camouflage in their respective environments, but their patterns serve different aesthetic and functional purposes.
Regarding whether snakes can shrink, research indicates that they can experience slight reductions in size during recapture events, but these changes are minimal compared to other species. The average reduction among observed snakes was about 1.07%, suggesting that significant shrinkage is uncommon.
It is essential to maintain skepticism and verify information when possible. Engaging with fact-checkers can provide clarity on dubious claims. Despite encountering misinformation in various forms, there are still many remarkable truths waiting to be discovered, along with dedicated journalists committed to accurate reporting.

140 years old!!!
Good catch. I thought, when I read it.. “Perhaps boas are like turtles…. perhaps they do live that long.” but I didn’t look it up. Turns out that’s about 100 years off.
“The oldest snake on record was a boa constrictor that died in 1977 at the age of 40.” –

It’s very interesting that people are still interested in river monsters snakes.
Best regards
Jensi
hard to believe…….they found a 55 foot, 140 year old snake, and only took one picture?
i agree
yes, it’s like kiling the world’s most famous terrorist and then dumping his body at sea?
wew the thing almost reach the ground even if the device is extending its arm wew??
maybe theyre just compensating for their tiny weiners LOL!
it maybe true, or it just might be an overly-feed type of BOA, not unless reporters gonna feed us some news a type of BOA the size and length of African tourist train plus a head the size of an ordinary Mercedez Benz.,,
omg, it is FAKE. the snake is closer than workers. that’s it
WAT THE HELL
I don’t think it was real 55 feet means the size showing in the screen is also not acceptable, if it is so there is only one still have been taken why the camera is not have a much memory to take it ?
Its great and very interesting, wat abt another snake………
Its Photoshop….. as the guy said closer to the top, why is there only one picture? and how can another 55ft snake just dissapear? WTF do they eat?
anything they want doooh
were is the snake now,if its not a fake they can make a video,,,,or sahe just desapere,,,hahaha
This is a real snake. It is NOT 55 ft. long. It is a Reticulated Python. They are common to that area and can grow to lengths of 33 ft. (largest on record). This snake is in the foreground making it appear larger. An approximate guess for this snake would be 24-26 ft. long.
This is not a Recticulated Python either this would be a Common Boa!!!!…And there is no way in HELL it is 55ft long!!!it’s Lenegth could be around 20 to 25 ft. but nothing more and it would be kinda hard to believe that as well. And i agree where are all the other photos of the snake if it really is 55ft. long there would be more pics and video of the creature!!!..I have seen many more pics and videos of small reptiles and they were mmore publiized then this is and was to!..Hmmm some people will go to extreme measures to be center of attention!!!
I’m sorry? That is not a common boa. I own one. That is a reticulated python. Look at the pattern of the snake in this picture and then look up a common boa on google. They look completely different.
if you know anything about snakes then look at the picture the girth of the snanke is smaller than the men standing near for the growth spurts is length and width
so it is too frickin thin for its lenth
If you notice the Backo scooper has been moved forward giving the illusion that the snake is not that big well thats what I think
is this true?course not..look, boa constrictor is large..but not that kind..imagine 55ft long..then how big is the head?and that head is same as anacondas which is the largest is 36ft..china..no.1 in gadgets..although not original..how come 1 pix..not high pixels..dont have other angles..people deserves true stories about creatures living with us…:)
its not possible bcoz biologically reticulated python can never atain more than 30 feet max. and saying abt boa a 40 ft used to live named titan cerrojonesis tat 2 milllion yrs of ago
They take only one picture, because the sneak was to big to fit on storage card ;-p
What gives this illusion away is the Hydraulic Excavator’s shovel…. it’s about 5 foot tall…. So comparing that to the snake, makes the snake actuallly about 25ft long. This particular illusion is called illusion of depth, where it seems the snake is at the same place as the men, when in fact the excavator is extend out to about 10 feet.
thats not a boa its a python
no one can say thats not a reticulated python. it looks nothing like a boa, i have a boa so i no wat they llook like, they dont get nearly that big even with perspective, and it has the same pattern as a retticulaated python
Yeah…boas most definitely do NOT get anywhere near that size. The longest snake in the world is the reticulated python and even those have only reached 33 feet on record. Anyway, if you looked at the actual snake in the picture, you can tell that it was a small snake held close to the camera and the background was a picture of men further away. Don’t believe everything you see or hear because if you actually research the subject, you’ll find that most of the people making these claims have no idea what they’re talking about.
i dont think its real… coz 55 foot and 140 year old snakes are not there on earth these days. even if some snake spices grow that long, people might hav killed it when it is 10 years old or 15 foot long. human invasion on forest hasn’t left a forest on earth is that dense.
fake and gay
I have had 2 friends with reticulated pythons over 15feet. That is a reticulated python. And forced perspective making an illusion. (as stated before, just casting my vote for the truth)
Thanks for the photo, This is a real snake. It is NOT 55 ft. long. It is a Reticulated Python. They are common to that area and can grow to lengths of 33 ft. (largest on record). This snake is in the foreground making it appear larger. An approximate guess for this snake would be 24-26 ft. long
It is possible for this to happen given the proper conditions if that snake lived in that forest it would not have much competition for food and being that it is that big it was probably released a very long time ago when food was much more abundant probably an owner of the snake released it because it was getting to big this happens very much owner don’t release their pets in the proper places and both snakes survived and who knows maybe they are even more of those giants those could just be part of a generation of snake given birth by an even bigger one.
Your way of telling all in this article is truly nice, all be capable of effortlessly understand it, Thanks a lot.
