A fascinating study by researchers highlights the health benefits of observing the charming seabirds known as boobies. Dr. Karen Weatherby, a gerontologist and the lead author of the study, suggests that spending time admiring these birds can be as invigorating as engaging in a rigorous exercise routine, potentially adding years to one’s life.
The five-year study involved 500 participants who were divided into two groups. One group was encouraged to spend at least ten minutes each day observing boobies, while the other group refrained from this activity. At the end of the study, those who regularly observed the birds showed improved health metrics, including lower blood pressure and reduced instances of heart disease.
Dr. Weatherby explained that the joy and excitement of watching these playful birds can enhance overall well-being. She noted, “Engaging with nature, particularly by observing these delightful creatures, can lead to significant health improvements.” The study indicated that enjoying such moments daily could reduce the risk of serious health issues.
Boobies are known for their unique behaviors and social structures. They nest in colonies and perform elaborate courtship displays, which include head nodding and a special dance called sky pointing. These displays not only serve to attract mates but also foster social bonds within their colonies.
While the study presents intriguing findings, some skepticism remains regarding its methodology and conclusions. Nonetheless, it emphasizes the potential benefits of connecting with nature through birdwatching, particularly with such captivating species as boobies.
Update: Snopes seems to think this study is a hoax.
The article referred to … was not printed in The New England Journal of Medicine or any other major medical journal. It is, in fact, a slight reworking of a piece that has run on at least two occasions in that celebrated tabloid Fountain of Truth, the Weekly World News (13 May 1997 and 21 March 2000) and has escaped into the wild. Although the Weekly World News occasionally slips up and prints a true story, we suspect this one belongs in the “HOW TO TELL IF YOUR DOG WORSHIPS SATAN!” and “NEW REMOTE-CONTROL DEVICE GIVES WOMEN ORGASMS — AT UP TO 80 YARDS AWAY!” class. – snopes
Oh my, Snopes. You dismiss things so easily! For those who may truly wonder if they have a demonological dog problem, here is how to tell if your dog worships Satan, from ChatGPT 4o, in December 2024:
To determine if your dog is exhibiting unusual behavior that might be interpreted as “worshiping Satan,” observe for signs of distress such as withdrawal, aggressive body language, unexplained fear, excessive barking or whining, changes in appetite, and repetitive behaviors like pacing. Key indicators include ears held back, low tail carriage, and avoiding eye contact, which can signal anxiety or discomfort. If you notice these signs, it’s important to assess your dog’s environment and any recent changes, and consider consulting a veterinarian or professional trainer for guidance.
In case you need something for your dog beyond what a trainer or a vet can provide: Yes, there are pet exorcists who offer services aimed at removing negative energy or bad spirits from animals. A notable example is the D+ Kirishima spa in Japan, which provides a “Pet Dog Exorcism Plan” conducted by a Shinto priest. This 30-minute ceremony, priced at approximately $235, is targeted at older or sick dogs and includes prayers for their health and well-being. The trend of offering spiritual services for pets is growing, appealing to pet owners who wish to incorporate religious or spiritual beliefs into their pets’ care[9].
And Snopes, there are remote control… well, never mind, this is a family friendly place.
Conclusion
While much of this article may be satirical, engaging in daily activities that elevate your mood and get your blood pumping—whether through exercise, enjoying nature, or sharing a good laugh—can indeed contribute to a longer, healthier life. Research shows that regular exercise is critical for maintaining good health; for instance, a study found that increasing daily activity by just 10 minutes can reduce mortality rates by 7% per year, with even greater benefits for longer durations of exercise[25]. Additionally, spending time in nature has been linked to numerous health benefits, including reduced stress, improved mood, and enhanced cognitive function[22][24]. Nature exposure can lower blood pressure and anxiety levels while promoting overall well-being[31]. Embracing joy through laughter and enjoyable activities not only enhances mental health but also fosters social connections, which are vital for longevity[28]. Therefore, remember to incorporate joyful experiences and physical activity into your daily routine, as this can lead to substantial health benefits and potentially extend your lifespan.

There’s a huge gap that includes neurophysiological and endocrinological components between ” … Gazing at breasts …” and “lower blood pressure, slower resting pulse rates and lesser episodes of coronary artery disease” that obviously are not being articulated, probably because “scientists” know very little about it. But, it was always nice for members of a patriarchal society to hear that staring at breasts is healthy. Whatever the links between staring and health are, they’re not really important. Are they?
No such study exists, unfortunately.
Ah, I knew I should have googled “Dr. Karen Weatherby, a gerontologist” before I posted this, but I was in a hurry. Good job and thank you. Post updated for 2024 to be just about the birds. Since it’s a hoax post anyway.
“unfortunately”? A supporter of our patriarchal society?
Obviously, “no such study exists,” because, like I said, “there’s a huge gap in the study … .” But, I guess no one caught on.
What does “male interest in the female body” have to with “staring at boobs”? (Talking about leaps in logic!) Staring is an obession and a mental problem from one perspective or merely rude from another.
If by “male interest in the female body” you mean female beauty, don’t you suppose female beauty is more than fatty protrusions of the mammary glands?
“… men still make more and have the most influence in our society currently, but NONE OF THE MEN I KNOW use attractiveness of women as a means to subjugate them.” (Capitalization added) is not a study, but a personal observation. I can find women who claim that pornography is not exploitative, that they voluntarily, willingly entered the field. I have read about prostitutes who “enjoy” their “occupation.” All this means what? Not much.
If you think that Western countries (some worse than others) are not patriarchal, which means primarily controlled by the male gender, which in turn means male tastes and desire dominate, (where a common slam is something like calling a male, a “girlie man”) … well, I don’t what to say, or perhaps read more … (like history :))
I disagree with you on the opinion that looking at pictures of the female mammary glands is a sin, but I agree that “girlie men” needs to stop being an insult. Of course, relatively few women are willing to date “girlie men”, so there might be a reason it’s an insult.
David,
Please read.
No, I didn’t say “looking at pictures of the female mammary glands is a sin.” I don’t know too much about “sin.” (maybe I should?)
I said, “staring at boobs … is an obsession and a mental problem from one perspective or merely rude from another.” You know, “staring,” to intently gaze, to google, to gawk, like you can’t get your mind on something else? If this behavior can’t be controlled then it is a problem, and in public this is rude. (If you don’t think it’s rude, try doing it to a woman with attractive breasts who has a husband or boyfriend nearby watching you. Its rudeness might be brought to your attention rather quickly, perhaps.)
I understand, “girlie men” to mean men who in some way are as women. (But, not just women, but young immature women, girls.) Presumably, it is an insult for men to be as women (or girls). Which means what? What does it say about women (or girls)? I haven’t read to many press reports (like governor of Calif.) of women calling men “girlie men.”
Anyway, for a woman to call a man (or think of a man as), a “girlie man,” is like a woman trying to insult a man, because he is as she is, a woman. This is funny, but I’m sure there are women who do this. But, many women also suffer from lower self-esteem, as well. (That is, they think less of themselves than what they should.) This is for any normal healthy person (male or female) a sad statement about our society.
If science says it increases health… so it shall be done!
