  1. Xeno,
I don’t know what it is, but Deep Springs is a creepy place, and the whole story of it has creeped me out since visiting 15 years ago. It’s a beautiful place that I happened upon while off roading in my VW buss down in Owens Valley. After returning to Sacramento, I went online and checked it out. Purposely isolated, founded by a rich dude, and a boys-only type place that is free of charge by working the farm.
    I can’t explain it.

    1. Here’s more on that: Deep Springs College has a reputation for being a unique and somewhat eerie place, primarily due to its isolation and unconventional lifestyle. Here are some key aspects that contribute to this perception:

      – Isolation: The college is located in a remote desert valley, far from urban life, which creates a sense of seclusion. This isolation is not just geographical; it is also a core principle of the college’s educational philosophy, intended to minimize distractions and foster deep personal reflection[2][4]. Visitors often describe the campus as dark and quiet, especially at night, which can evoke feelings of discomfort or eeriness[1].

      – Student Experience: The student body is small and self-governing, with rigorous academic demands coupled with manual labor on the ranch. This environment can lead to intense interpersonal dynamics, where students engage in lengthy discussions and debates that may seem excessive or even cult-like to outsiders[1][3]. Some visitors have noted that the students appear withdrawn or overly serious, contributing to an unsettling atmosphere[1].

      – Cultural Norms: The absence of typical college experiences—such as parties or social outings—further enhances the feeling of isolation. Students are prohibited from leaving campus during term time, which can create a claustrophobic environment[2][4]. Additionally, the college’s strict policies against alcohol and drugs add to its unique culture, making it feel more like a secluded retreat than a traditional educational institution[5].

      – Historical Context: Founded by L.L. Nunn, who believed in the transformative power of isolation, Deep Springs embodies his vision of education through self-governance and hard work. This historical backdrop adds an element of mystique to the college, as it operates under principles that may seem outdated or extreme by modern standards[2][4].

In summary, while Deep Springs College is admired for its educational model and beautiful surroundings, its combination of physical isolation, intense academic culture, and strict community rules can perhaps create a “creepy” atmosphere for some visitors.
